Artist Statement

The ocean has lost half of its Coral Reefs since 1950, with it predicted that by 2050 all Coral Reefs will have died if serious action is not taken. I hand make detailed ceramic sculptures that present climate change through the fragility of coral reefs. Using ceramics is a vital part of my practice as it reflects the structure and delicacies of coral which encourages the viewer to be cautious around them. I am also inspired by the scientific data surrounding coral which is shown in the hexagonal tiles I use within my work. Scientists have been using hexagonal structures to grow new coral in hopes of repairing the reefs. This aspect therefore gives a sense of hope in my work which juxtaposes against the stark whiteness of the glaze I use which represents the death of coral. My work provides an opportunity for the observer to reflect on these issues in a way that moves beyond fear and blame which often dominates the conversation concerning climate. I believe that people are more likely to want to make a positive change if they are shown through art the impacts of continuing to behave in a way that is harmful.
